The Athletic Trainer as a Physician Extender – Introduction
8:00 am – 12:00 pm General Session
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm Breakout Sessions
This career workshop will discuss the definition of a physician extender, how they operate in the physician practice, job duties and responsibilities of an AT and how they can improve the MD efficiency. Workshop attendees will learn where to find PE positions and locate the training programs available. Participants will earn 8 CEUs; the cost is $80 for students and $120 for members.
The Athletic Trainer as a Physician Extender – Advanced
8:00 am – 12:00 pm: General session
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Breakout Sessions
This career workshop is geared toward athletic trainers with experience working in the physician extender role. The program will include speakers that are AT professionals in the field and give attendees advanced learning skills and ways to provide positive impact to their physician practice. This will include information on multi-credentialing, coding, setting up a DME business, improving patient throughput and creating clinic efficiencies. Participants will earn 8 CEU’s; the cost is $80 for students and $120 for members.

Attendees may select to attend the Casting Workshop or any two of the other three workshops offered below.
Breakout #1: Beginners Casting Workshop
1 – 5 p.m.
- Demonstration & hands-on experience of the short arm cast, short leg cast, and thumb spica cast provided by National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists
Breakout #2: Surgical First Assist Workshop (Two sessions)
1 – 3 p.m
3 – 5 p.m.
- This interactive workshop will be set up as a mock operating room including demonstration and hands-on experience of scrubbing, gloving, preparing a sterile field, prepping, draping, instrumentation, review the roles and responsibilities of a surgical first assist
Breakout #3: Suturing and Knot Tying Workshop (Two sessions)

- This interactive workshop involves surgical skills around suturing. Learn the different techniques used in the operating room for tying suture knots including square knot, surgeon’s knot, and the deep tie. Receive a manual, CD and knot –tying board for attending
Breakout #4: Radiology (One session)
1:15 – 2:45 p.m.
- Helping the AT understand radiographic interpretation including x-rays, MRIS and CT scans
Connecting Athletic Trainers with the Performing Arts
8:00 am – 12:00 pm
Take your performing arts athletic training to the next level by attending this workshop. Learn new research and clinical insights about dancer’s feet and ankles. Presentations will also cover balance training and implications for dance injuries as well as new findings in injury assessment and treatment of the ‘hanging athlete’. Learn innovative ways of reaching and connecting with dancers, while helping them get from the clinic to the stage. Speakers from The University of California, Cirque du Soleil, Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, AthletiCo Chicago and Cincinnati Ballet will be presenting. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from these leaders in this unique field. Participants will earn 4 CEUs; the cost is $40 for students and $60 for members.
Taking Care of Those Who Take Care of Us – Managing the Health and Wellness of the Public Safety Employee
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
This workshop will give attendees the opportunity to learn about athletic training skills specific to the public safety setting – police, fire and rescue, EMS employees. Attendees will be exposed to typical injury patterns, strategies utilized to improve the employee’s work status, nutrition for public safety and ROI data which can be used to approach an agency. Participants will earn 4 CEUs; the cost is $40 for students and $60 for members.
Business of Athletic Training
8:00 am – 12:00 pm
This workshop is designed to incorporate basic business concepts into the tool kit of all athletic trainers. These tools, though unique to some athletic trainers, are as necessary as learning how to tape. This workshop will focus on business concepts such as marketing, growing a business, leadership, networking, and how to create and build your “business” strategy. The workshop will assist the athletic trainer of any setting to incorporate these concepts into their place of employment. Participants will earn 4 CEUs; the cost is $40 for students and $60 for members.
Networking Reception for Emerging Settings and Career Development Experiences (CDE)

Athletic trainers who are leaders in various settings, including occupational, industrial, corporate, hospital, clinic, physician extender, performing arts, military, law enforcement, government and more will be there waiting to speak with you! Free snacks will be provided with a cash bar.
